About us...

Importing Asta Nielsen Database emerged from the international conference "Importing Asta Nielsen - Cinema-going and the Making of the Star System in the Early 1910s" which took place at the German Film Museum in Frankfurt, 27 to 29 September 2011, hosted by Deutsches Filminstitut and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the University of Trier.

The proceedings of the conference were published in 2013:
Martin Loiperdinger and Uli Jung (eds): Importing Asta Nielsen - The International Film Star in the Making 1910-1914. KINtop Studies in Early Cinema vol 2. New Barnet. John Libbey Publishing, 2013. (for distribution in North America and Asia and for distribution in Europe.)
Importing Asta Nielsen Database is designed to become the tool for international research into the distribution and exhibition of Asta Nielsen films in many countries before the First World War. This topic is crucial for the emergence of cinema as the leading medium of entertainment in the first half of the 20th century: Asta Nielsen was the first international film star who made her name a brand, nearly unrivalled in many countries in the years 1911 and 1912.

The content of the database refers to texts and advertisements which were published worldwide in the trade press and the local press up to the end of the year 1915 on Asta Nielsen films and on individuals involved in the production, distribution, exhibition, and reception of the 27 long-feature films with Asta Nielsen in the lead role which were released before the First World War. The database offers a wide range of options to get access to printed sources from many countries which give information on Asta Nielsen and her 27 pre-war films.

Users may start their research in the database content from different points of interest: They may search for film titles (original titles or distribution titles in a certain country). Specific dates (e.g. a certain programming season or month) or localities (cities, countries) can be searched for. Also articles on Asta Nielsen`s screen personality or on individuals and companies involved in the production, distribution and exhibition of Asta Nielsen films are accessible.

Importing Asta Nielsen Database is a work in progress. The growing number of items opens new perspectives for research on the emergence of cinema as the leading leisure time attraction for many people in the last years of the Belle Epoque, 1910 to 1914.

Users are invited to contribute texts and advertisements to be included in the database. The scans and/or xeroxes of the texts and advertisements must be legible, at least. Any item sent to us for publication should clearly indicate the source which it is taken from.

This is EDITION 05 of the database, dated 2017-09-10. Contents and contributors are listed in Content. There users will also find a current and continually updated bibliography on worldwide distribution and exhibition of all Asta Nielsen films released before the First World War.
